What can I expect during my first acupuncture treatment?
The first time you come for an acupuncture treatment we will thoroughly discuss your problem. This will include medical history and other subjects that might be important for a TCM-diagnosis (Traditional Chinese Medicine). Examples are: whether you prefer cold or heat; how well you sleep; what time of the day are you most tired; your diet; do you have a craving for sweet or savoury for example. Emotions will all be important to set up your personal acupuncture treatment plan.
I will also be feeling your pulse and looking at your tongue before making a diagnosis. This will all give me a good idea of the state of the energy in the different organs and meridians.
Acupuncture is Holistic Medicine, Body and mind are seen as one and are influenced by one another.
After the anamnesis the actual treatment starts. You will comfortably lie down on a treatment table while several needles are placed on your feet, legs, arms, abdomen or back, depending on the complaints you have. These will be taken out after 20 minutes or so. Most people find the treatment very relaxing and hardly ever do I hear people saying the needles hurt.
After that I might do some massage or Moxa Treatment especially if there is pain and I might also give you some advise about your diet or lifestyle.
How many treatments will I need?
It depends on the nature of your complaint and also on the duration. Chronic problems might take longer to treat than for example a sprained ankle.
But you will usually notice an improvement after a few acupuncture treatments. In the beginning you might get treated more frequently (once or twice a week) and when you start feeling better, the gaps between acupuncture treatments will get longer.
If there is no improvement after 5 treatments we will discuss to see if more treatments are needed or if maybe acupuncture might not be the right choice of medicine.
I would also like to stress that I have never really liked it when I was being treated by a therapist who’s simultaniously treating other people so that’s why I don’t do that myself.
So when you come for an acupuncture treatment, I am not treating other people at the same time. You have my full attention.
